What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease occurs when the gums become irritated due to prolonged exposure to tartar, bacteria and plaque. The earliest stages of gum disease can be identified by swollen and darkened gums that may begin to bleed when the individual flosses or has their teeth professionally cleaned. Many people believe that this is no big deal, and they choose to ignore the problem at this stage, but this can be a huge mistake.

As gum disease progresses, the gums will begin to retract and pull away from the teeth. This will create empty spaces called periodontal pockets that can quickly become infected. As the bacteria, tartar and plaque travel deeper, it’s possible that the jawbone and the connective tissues of teeth will also become infected. If this happens, tooth loss may follow.

This treatment involves using dental tools to access the areas deep below the gum line that cannot be reached with at-home brushing and flossing. This allows us to carefully clean out these areas and remove any bacteria, tartar and plaque. Next, we will then smooth out any rough spots on the roots to prevent future buildups. With the harmful material removed, the gums should then begin to heal and reattach themselves to the teeth.
